Ark Commissions

I’ve been making my Noah’s Ark sets for many years now. The variety of animals I originally offered has expanded from a couple of dozen to a point now where there is no limit. Old customers keep adding to their sets and new customers add their personal favourites.

A similar evolution has taken place with the arks. To start with there was only one size of ark with four possibilities: unpainted or with a choice of three painted versions. Subsequently I added a larger Super ark. In a similar way the possibilities for commissioning the arks continue to expand. I have my customers to thank for their creativity in presenting me with new challenges that take my work off in different directions.

Here are some examples of variations on my Super arks with the following numbered illustrations. I have made categories A, B and C

A.  A super ark with a unique design which maintains the formula of frieze and windows.

1. Rose frieze ark. Special design for frieze and colour way on the ark, blues and cream.

2. Greek ark. With wave-pattern frieze, eye on hull to reflect Greek parentage of grandchild. Roof and hull natural timber.

B.  A super ark with a much more complicated decoration based on the customer’s own home and garden.

1. Outback ark. This came from a family in Australia who asked me to draw on style details of local buildings such as corrugated iron roof and the wooden verandah. Please note indigenous kangaroos and emus.

2. The customer is a fabric designer whose own work is richly patterned. She asked for an ark like her cottage and garden.

C.  Arks which require major structural changes to re-create an original building.

1. Medieval gatehouse—a building the customer has long admired.Medieval Gatehouse

2. South African Cape Dutch House.

3. Modernist South African Cape Dutch House.
